Systemic Therapy & EMDR: Healing Within Your Family Story

Systemic Therapy located in Anglesea, Surf Coast - working with people in Torquay, Geelong and Surf Coast & Australia-wide.

At the heart of my work, as a Clinical Family Therapist, is a systemic perspective one that sees your experiences in the context of your relationships, family, and history. The understanding that we are shaped not only by our personal experiences but also by the emotional systems we come from. This includes family, culture, and relationships, all of which influence how we think, feel, and connect.

A Systemic Approach to Therapy

Understanding how your past shapes your present.

You don’t exist in isolation. You’re part of a bigger story one that includes your family, your culture, and the relationships that have shaped you over time.

Sometimes the anxiety, guilt, or overwhelm you’re feeling isn’t just about what’s happening now. It’s also about patterns and roles that have been passed down through generations.

I use a systemic approach, which means we look at the bigger picture not just what’s going on inside you, but what’s happening around you and what you’ve inherited emotionally, even if no one ever spoke about it.

Bowen Family Systems

Some of the struggles we face, like overthinking, people pleasing, or emotional distancing can be part of long standing family patterns.

Together, we can explore:

  • How to stay connected to loved ones without losing yourself

  • Why some relationships feel emotionally “cut off” or tense

  • Whether you’ve taken on fears, roles, or expectations from past generations

Contextual Therapy

This approach helps us look at the emotional and invisible “ties” within families things like loyalty, guilt, or feeling responsible for others’ pain.

Together, we discover:

  • Whether you're carrying emotional burdens that aren't really yours

  • Unspoken expectations about love, loyalty, or silence

  • How to restore fairness and balance in your relationships

Systemic EMDR

EMDR is a powerful method for healing trauma and when combined with systemic thinking and schema therapy, it helps explore how trauma lives in your family system, not just within you.

I integrate EMDR with Bowen and Contextual ideas along with other systemic theory:

  • Exploring trauma connected to family roles and loyalties

  • Targeting memories tied to responsibilities you didn’t choose

  • Helping you release burdens you may have inherited

This means your healing can go deeper addressing not only your personal pain but also the relational and generational stories you carry.

Why This Matters

When we look at the full context, your history, your family, your relationships therapy can go deeper. It’s not just about managing symptoms, it’s about healing patterns at their root.

With this approach, I can support you to:

  • Let go of roles and patterns that don’t serve you

  • Feel clearer in your relationships

  • Heal inherited emotional pain

  • Build a stronger, more grounded sense of self

You may be carrying a story that’s ready to shift. I’m here to journey alongside you.
